Definition of Terms

Metaphysics

This is the study of the inner person; your, thoughts, beliefs and aspirations. It is simply the study of factors that are beyond physical. This means that such factors cannot be seen but are manifested in our deeds and actions (Royce, p9).

INTRODUCTION

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Meditation is a very simple thing yet very critical in the well being of every human being. According to physicians, very many people suffer due to inadequate power to meditate up on their lives. Our daily life has got a lot of experiences and encounters that negativelyand positively affect our life in general. This study is mainly concerned with those activities and experiences that affect us adversely so as to bring the situation back to normal life and even improve our lives. This has both mental and psychological effects that if not well managed, can be very disastrous to our lives. It is also in the effort of adding knowledge to the existing gap.

Our daily activities such as commuting to work in either mornings or evenings, reaching destinations in the specified or stipulated time, exam failure, high costs of living, health challenges and relationship problems are proving to be critical in our well being. Such encounters result to stress and when not well managed, may worsen into depression (Scogin, p.1).

Stress is considered the world’s deadly disease by metaphysicians; leave alone HIV and AIDS. It should be noted that, thesediseases cannot be avoided, but can be well managed when you have the right skills of meditation. Infact, it is the safest and simplest way to cure individuals.

Stress has culminated into very deadly conditions such as: breakups in relationships, drug and substance abuse, committing suicide, low productivity at work, violent relationships among others deviant acts. People who don’t know how to manage stress usually have low self esteem as they suffer from phobia. For instance, according UNODC report, there are about 141 million drug users world wide. Out of these, 8 million are heroine addicts, 30 millions cocaine users and 30 amphetamine users (UNODC, paragraph 3). Such people get embedded in such acts because of stress among other factors. Due to inadequate power of meditation, majority of them get destroyed just like that. The situation worsens when a family person carries the same to the house.

This is a big problem because it adversely affects children and even the couple’s way of life.Lack of meditation upon one’s life has resulted into majority of people committing suicide in the contemporary society. This comes as result of perceiving despair and doomed future. When a person reaches this level, he or she sees no reason of living any more. Life at such a stage is meaning less. Therefore, killing one self suffices as the better option.

According to United States National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), suicide was the leading cause of deaths in USA accounting for 34,598 deaths. It is reported that, the overall deaths per 100,000 people is 11.3% suicide deaths. This is very alarming; yet it is a major preventable public health related problem.It‘s causes are associated with depression, and other mental acts, family violence, firearms in the home among other factors. Acts of suicide are not the best ways to respond to stress. There are other simple and safe means like meditation as outlined by metaphysicians.Research has shown those suicide acts are closely related to changes in brain chemicals. This is mainly created from the ways we see and perceive things around our environment (Poland, p.3). It is therefore very essential that we come up with means and measures of tackling this problem head on. This would save the future generation from collapsing.Suicide is a big blow to the society as it undermines societal progress.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

General Objective

The general objective of this study is to bring about and promote the general well being of the people; psychologically, mentally, spiritually and physically, and hence a productive healthy society free from what is perceived as societal vices.

The Power of Mediation

As earlier seen, meditation refers to self reflection, thoughts and contemplation that regulate individual minds through training attention and awareness hence bringing about mental well being and development. Other scholars define meditation as a continuous and unbroken awareness of the mind. It encompasses resilience fromdistractions and dissipated energies into a blissful of awareness. Meditation to that end is therefore necessary for every one to look back at his or her life, set targets, work

towards them and develop resilience to the pitfalls that accompany the target. Meditation helps to relax your mind and focus on achieving objective and eventually promotes good relation with others. We are now moving to a level where people are developing interests and desire for meditation as outlined by researchers. It is nolonger a practice of old people who have retired from jobs. It is essential for all people irrespective of their ages as it is a necessary tool in reducing stress and creating a peaceful mind for individuals. Peace of mind is essential in development of the society and general well being of every person. Today, there is general increase in meditation awareness as most people who practice it and findings of most research reveal that, it is beneficial for all people. In addition, it brings about unity, peaceful coexistence hence brotherhood relations. This is because people are able to reflect about life, think about why they exist, their roles in life and end. It fosters self discovery; this is why doctors’ world wide and health institutions nowadays encourage their patients to practice meditation on a daily basis(Broch, p.1-9).

The Practice of Meditation

The practice of meditation on a daily basis helps us with necessary tools to counter the experience of bliss. It is this tools that show us the path to our daily lives.Research has shown that meditation helps us realize and indeed experience a calm and beautiful inner self as you disengage from you surrounding and get deeper to yourself.

In our daily life, we are always experiencing a state of consciousness. This state of consciousness is usually is focused on our thoughts, perceptions and emotions that come as a result of our life experiences or inner thought and feelings of the environment around us. All these process take place in our subconscious mind. It cannot be seen unless one is a metaphysician capable of reading the ‘beyond physical factors’ that affect us. What ever we talk, feel, perceive or even interpret is the work of the mind (Barrett, p.1-10). Therefore to be is to perceive. When a person feels that life has got no meaning, it is the state of the mind. Such a person may easily commit suicide because life means nothing to him or her.

Our minds are usually preoccupied by our thoughts, feelings, perceptions and interpretations of activities and experiences of our daily lives. This pre occupied ideas and thoughts usually conflict with the real activities that we experience. This is common when our minds are totally attached to these preoccupying thought. It prevents as from perceiving and acting fundamentally with much awareness. This implies that, we are unable to move to the level of pure consciousness. We might be living in a dream life which in real sense does no arise. This is what causes people to act in very quire manner as these two minds collide (Khenpo, p. 1-18).

The practice of meditation is aimed at allowing us free our minds from the preoccupied ideas and thoughts that affect our actions and deeds and connect us with our deeper being. This detaches a person from the surface level of the mind to the inner person. It is at this stage that we are able to come to the spiritual reality and the mind focuses on an issue or events from both sides. Detachment from surface activities allows a person to become more consciously aware of what ever is affecting a particular person. You are able to reflect with greater consciousness and act in accordance per societal expectations. Your mind at the pure conscious level connects activities and events with much easy hence bringing a peaceful and calm moment in ones life. Meditation gives the mind ample chance to lead you without any interference.

It is through meditation; proper meditation that we are able to connect our conscious minds from the primary perceptions thoughts, feelings and other ideas that we experience to the greater reality that is the cause of our actions. Through meditation, we are able to connect with life realities that facilitate greater awareness and ability to perceive certain things that are usually unavailable when we are attached to the surface level of reality without identification with activities of the roaming mind; as aresult of our day to day encounters. This process allows the mind to compose without disturbances and bring about greater awareness of life realities. It is indeed therapeutic as the mind is allowed to relax and act in accordance to the reality of life on earth. Meditation enables us to distance our minds from surface level activities that usually preoccupy our minds hindering us from taping our abilities from our consciousness and developing it. For meditation benefits to be felt, it has to be done on a daily basis.

The state of pure conscious does not disappear after the meditation period, instead, it manifests in our daily life activities and brings about overall life benefits in the way we perceive life, act and relate with one another. We develop a deep understanding and analysis of issues before acting instead of being directly affected by the surface level conscious of our minds. Research has shown that meditation connects us with our spiritual sources and as a result, it is very critical to our well being health wise. It enhances proper functioning of our minds thus aids greater peace of mind, harmony and effectiveness. This promotes efficiency and general body functioning.

The process of meditation involves knowing your goals in life and concentration on the issue or idea is required. It is important to practice meditation in a cool environment where there is calm. Develop a relaxed mind and self awareness. Keep on doing meditation and develop real feeling of your self without any interference in a calm quiet environment.This would enable you to reflect on your life. Meditation Stages

It is highly encouraged by metaphysicians that you develop a greater conscious level of your body, mind, thoughts and feelings to bring about calmness and relaxation of the body. This is achieved by adherence to the above mentioned meditation practices.

When the body has relaxed and calmed, it is now possible to develop a greater sense of awareness of inner self. At this stage, it is the brain working without interference of the preoccupied surface level activities of our life experience. Discovery of innerself and eventually self awareness is a source of renewal as it energizes and givesyou more power. Ultimately, you are able to achieve greater self realization and rejuvenation.

Meditation Styles as enlisted by Metaphysicians

There are different styles or types of meditation that are practiced by people from all walks of life while striving to bring about the fundamental tenets of reflection and silent thoughts to bring about a state of rumination. The first one is Mindfulness meditation. This is the most commonly practiced style of meditation. It involves being conscious or aware of yourenvironment. It may include sounds and other activities that happen in your surrounding. Mindful meditation allows the minds to freely wander without focusing on a particular issue. It may happen for instance when you are travelling a long journey in a plane or by bus where people are engaged in various activities of chatting and listening to music. It is mostly practiced during prayer sessions. To practice spiritual meditation, one has to be in a quiet and calm environment and concentrate on a particular issue of interest. This style of meditation is usually very rewarding as it brings about mental and spiritual relaxation hence one is reenergized to proceed with life activities with a renewed mind and resolutions.

Focused meditation is yet another style of meditation. It is an effective way to release stressing ideas in your day to day activities.Instead of turning to suicide, alcohol and drug abuse or resorting to violence, practice focused meditation. It helps to focus on an object or just sounds of music and stay committed to bring about calmness and concentration. This brings about a gentle relaxation and peaceful mind. You become rejuvenated with a real picture of the world around you. It allows the mind to relax and thus can easily focus with much attention and awareness.

For instance, in the case of students, you might have had problems in your family and your mind is ever thinking about it. This activity of thought preoccupies the mind. You try very hard to study because you have exams the following day but nothing sinks in he head. You pressurize yourself and study till very late before you sleep. When you wake up in the morning and go to the exam room, you realize that your mind hardly remembers anything to write although the paper is about what exactly you were studying. In such a situation, it is meditation that you need, just relax, compose your mind and try as much as possible to forget the real life surface activities preoccupying your mind. Identification with the family activities prevent your mind from focusing on the exams and thus the mind appears to be empty.

In future, when faced with family problems that appear to identify with your mind so much; for students who have exams, take some time before the exam day and practice focused meditation and make sure you have enough sleep, not less than six hours. This is psychological therapeutic to such conflicts of the mind that hinders people from progress in their daily chores.

The final style of meditation is referred to as mantra meditation. It involves chanting of loud noises during the meditation process. The point of focus becomes the loud sounds produced. The vibration produced enables the mind to focus on a particular sound as this is the subject of focus. It allows the mind not to be interrupted by other things around. According to Weiss, in his book,   “The Healing Power of Meditation”, meditation is a healing process. It generally contributes to the well being of the people. This is the reason why he has included meditation in his medical practice. He says that in his profession, he has encountered patients whose suffering would to be reduced just by meditating. Most people suffer from stress that result from daily life activities and experiences that would be cured safely and in the simplest manner like a moment of meditation on adaily basis.This helps a lot from a feeling of hopelessness and despair that may lead people to engage in deviant acts and behaviorssuch as abuse of drugs, suicide and worsening of chronic diseases.He says that meditation is a form of healing that is free of charge and has no side effects. When a person experiences stress and fails in a number of times to manage it, it might worsen to depression. This is a very dangerous level and can result into complete destruction of ones life (P.8-12).

Weiss continues to say that he has witnessed peoplerecover, gain consciousness and develop a positive life view from a simple act of meditation. Meditation helps us understand ways in which we connect to different activities of life, their importance, and our purpose in life. Time needed to experience the benefits of meditation also varies with respect to what is being treated. Meditation helps cancer patients in reducing depression and restoring calm and peace of mind. It also helps in reducing pain associated with cancer; and boosting of the immune system which is critical in self healing and destroying cancer cells.A study carried out on female suffering from breast cancer has revealed that observance of meditation tends to increase white blood cells that fight and kill cancer causing cells. Such an exercise has to be continuous for better results.

Schroeder,s Views on Benefits of Meditation Spiritually

According to Schroeder, we gain spiritual knowledge through attending church services and other spiritual centers, lectures, seminars among others. Having attended all this, we still feel that we have not achieved close moment to our spirits. It’s through calmness and quietenvironment through the meditation process that connects as to the inner self. It is a very peaceful affair as you experience joy of your life without using effort and get acquainted by knowledge and answers to what has been troubling you (p.131). According to him, the practice of meditation has not been the foundation of metaphysics for a long time in the western world; but the power of silence was acknowledged. It is highly encouraged and practiced nowadays because of the importance attached to it as revealed by most researches. He further says that any one willing to resolve his problems, must take time to meditate and mentally treat the problem. The begging of our problems is what we perceive in the mind. It was given that; man might understand the meaning of life and find soul freedom” (Schroeder, p. 133).ParamahansaYogananda,in his book“Journey to Self Realization.”believes that we were created to have a deeper understanding of the world around us. This according to him and metaphysicians can be achieved by obeyingthe stages and process of meditation.Meditation provides a chance to turn to life, understand the surrounding and appreciate life. We must remain calm mindful in order to perceive and recognize things around us. It is a very powerful tool indeed (Caiden, P.75-76).

According to Jameson, meditation allows one to explore in details the ins and out of thoughts of life through a silent moment of self reflection. This process is not always easy especially for beginners. It requires concentration and attention to one self. One has to seek mindfulness during the practice with a clear understanding of where you are at the moment, where you are headed to and where you came from. It overloads the information that builds up in the mind as a result of our daily life activities. It aids people to gain a new perspective over the stressful life activities. In this case, one rethinks more consciously and seriously about his or her existence and thus prevents acts like suicide commission, drug abuse, violent relationships in homes and places of work among other habits considered immoral in the society. This is done because of increased awareness, focus and reduction of negative emotions in the mind(Watson, p.2-8). Meditation enables a person interact with the spirits; therefore, it is a key to peace and spirituality. It is like a person reaches heaven just by meditating and in the process experiences calmand peace of mind that is usually relaxing and wonderful. It is the focus on a specific issue or idea with the aim is a greater visualization and understanding. According to many researchers, an issue or subject you meditate upon usually is well understood and liked as you can see it in your mind and come up with proper approach towards it.

If a person constantly meditates on evil things and degrading thoughts, he or she will actually be doomed as it sinks deep in the mind. This makes a person to feel unworthy, degraded and developsa very low self esteem. In the end people start behaving in very funny ways. This is all because of what you decide to take into your minds and thoughts. On the other hand, if you decide in your mind that you are going to achieve something whether it is viewed by other impossible or not, it will be possible. Meditating on the issue will give you a deep understanding on that particular theme and you will be energized to work towards achieving your target. That is why all success in life starts in a healthy blend of minds and thoughts. What you actually think of frequently is where you grow towards. If you constantly thick of peace and success in life that is where you will grow towards. In meditation, you are made much aware of the future in that line of thoughts and you work hard towards it because you are encouraged. Ultimately you will achieve your dreams that way. It is therefore, recommended that you avoid meditating on disturbing and misleading thoughts as you will be misled by those thoughts in life. There is power in meditation. It does not necessarily need to be formal; you all need to mentally disappear into something in a quiet and calm environment for instance, while walking in the beach or just relaxing on a bed. It is all about forming a mental image when you are not compelled by anything or any one.

Dreams and desires

According to Wattles, in his book, “The Science of Getting Rich”,(p.41-47), he says that you cannot achieve something in life unless you have a clear picture of what you want. It is essential to have a definite mental picture of what you want to transmit into actual tangible or visible object. Most people embarrass themselves because they have vague or don’t have actual ideas in their minds of what they want in life. You therefore, must impress your thinking capability before you can give out any constructive and beneficial ideas. Unless you have impressed thinking substance, you cannot give. He continues to say that, all people have desires for great things, wealth, doing good and travelling around the world but majority fail to impress their thinking, by not knowing exactly what they want and not being definite. According to him, you can never get rich and creative by merely passing or sending unformed longings and vague wishes. The problem of having blurred and vague desires can be primarily solved by having some quality time to meditate upon your life in a quite environment. While the mind is not disturbed, it is able to bring out a visual picture of your desires in life. It is through the concentration that you will realize the realities in life and your thoughts and desires. With the renewed energy and clear picture, you are able to strategize and work towards achievement of your desires. Although checkered by failure, consistence in your line of thought will lead you to discoveries, innovations and you will really be a successful person. It is important you badly know what you want and stay with it in your minds without any deviations. It does not require any effort; keep contemplating on it and eventually you are directed to the purpose of your desires and dreams. The more you dwell on your issues of desire, the more the mental picture becomes clear and easy in your minds. As a clear vision of your desire becomes, the more you need to see a tangible expression of your thoughts and desires. One has to have faith and continued purpose and feeling of extending the hand to capture what belongs to you. Possess your desires mentally and you will really have them physically.This is even evident in The Holy Biblewhere it is written:

“Therefore I tell you, what ever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received, and it will be yours” (The Holy Bible; English Standard Version, Mark 11: 24).

He continues to say that going to church or place of worship only on the Sabbath day is not enough. It is also important that you create time to communicate with dedication to God orally so that He may strengthen your faith. Prayers are very important in metaphysics because you directly interact with God. Prayers affect a person’s emotions and way of life in clarifying about your dreams and desires and also strengthening of your faith in your line of pursuance. He adds by saying,

“Pray without ceasing… Believe that ye receive them” (Wattles, p.45).

The whole issue culminates in forming a clear vision of what you want in life. Once the vision is mentally clear, you can turn to God in prayer to strengthen you in your faith. Clear mental picture and thoughts will push you to work hard because you are able to see victory.What you only need is to go with confidence and take what belongs to you. Wattle stresses on the importance of prayer in realizing your dreams. Think and speak what you have requested in your prayer and it would be done. The Bible is still very clear and right on this issue. Wattle say that it is faith and purpose in life that draws the difference between a dreamer and a scientist. CHAPTER 3:METHODS

DATA COLLECTION

My thesis research will involvea survey on a group of twenty patients in a hospital with the help of medical practitioners in charge of counseling and real medical practitioners. The survey study will be on blood pressure, chronic illness, stress and depression, patients undergoing drug related treatment and survivors of suicide attempts. The survey will also explore effects of meditation on age, peace of mind and mind relaxation after the practice. Tenparticipants will be used as a control trial experiment and the remaining ten will be used for the real experiment.It will involve random selection of equal numbers of males and females. I will use transcendental meditation technique. This is because it is simple, natural and allows the mind to freely wander until it arrives at a state where it settles down. This is what is referred to by metaphysicians as transcendental consciousness (Anderson, p.310-316). The participants in the actual experiment will be practicing in the morning and in the evening for aperiod of about 15-20 minutes. SUMMARY

The study involves attempt to answer the following: Does meditation reduce stress and brings about relaxation? What is the relationship between meditation and peace of mind? Is meditation therapeutic? Does meditation contribute to a happy life? And to establish relationship between meditation and aging. In my effort to try and answer these questions, I did a thorough and intensive literature review on prior experiments done on various elements of meditation.
