This Skill Development Project allows you to choose your own area of skill specialisation. Think about which skill is most critical to YOU right now. See this as an opportunity to develop your own knowledge and skills in an area of relative weakness.

PART A. Article Review (15 marks)

You are required to find FOUR recent and relevant articles from scholarly journals relating to your specialisation topic. Each article needs to have been written in the past ten years, althoughexceptions may be made where the article is considered ground breaking. The articles should relate directly to your topic area and may include articles that are theory building, articles that are case study based and/or articles that are empircally based.

Your review should not merely summarise the key points of your articles. Rather it should attempt to compare and contrast the ideas and methodologies adopted in the various articles. For example,discuss the methodologies used in the studues, compare the strengths and weaknesses of each article’s approach, assess any biases or limitations of the studies. You will be provided with some materials on critical thinking in academic writing. You will also have a lecture on advanced research skills and academic writing during the semester.

Some examples of scholarly journals to look for your articles include (but are not limited to):

PART B. Skill Development Activity (20 marks)

The practitioner allows himself to experience surprise, puzzlement, or confusion in a situation which he finds uncertain or unique. He reflects on the phenomenon before him, and on the prior understandings which have been implicit in his behaviour. He carries out an experiment which serves to generate both a new understanding of the phenomenon and a change in the situation. (Schon, 1983)

This section of your project allows you to put your new knowledge on your area of specialisation to the test! You will need to find a sample group of five people to test your skill development activityon. Your sample group might include:-A group of colleagues who you work with

A group of fellow students in another major or study program (do not choose students enrolled in this subject)

A group of friends in your football team

A group of cousins and/or brothers and sisters

A group of friends from your local church or youth group

Your task is to choose a development activity designed to increase awareness and/or skills in your area of specialisation and implement this with your sample group. The internet is full of ideas for skill development activities but be careful to choose something that is relevant for your chosen sample. Alternatively you may like to develop your own activity. Some examples might be:-Indoor rock climbing team building day (topic – teamwork)

Multicultural food at work – enhancing acceptance and understanding (topic – diversity)

No technology for a day (topic – communication)

Listening with blindfolds (topic – listening)

Trading places for a day (topic – time/stress or values/ethics)

This section of your report needs to include the following information:-

(i) An introduction to your chosen skill development activity, including a description of why you

chose it, and a list of OBJECTIVES you intend to achieve

(ii) A description of your chosen sample group, including a PHOTO of your group

(iii) A discussion of how the activity progressed, what worked and what didn’t – include any

questionnaires that were distributed or any reflections that your sample group wrote as appendices

but discuss results in the body of your report

(iv) A reflection on the activity. What did your sample group gain personally from this activity? What

did you learn? How would you do things differently next time? Is this a useful activity for managers

to use to increase skill awareness and/or competency in organisations? Why/why not?

  • Your final report should include:

A main title page for your report, complete with student name, student number, Lecturer’s name and class day and time

A table of contents

A title page for each of the two parts (ie part A and part B)

For each of your four articles, include the FRONT PAGE of the article as an Appendix to your report

Your article review/critique, for part A

Your introduction, description, discussion and reflection for part B

Any photos, questionnaires, reflection sheets, activity guidelines/rules should be included as Appendices to your report (with the exception of the photo of your sample group which should be in the report body)

Reference list for your four articles, in Harvard format· Any evidence of plagiarism (attempts to reproduce of copy the published work of others) will not be accepted, and will be dealt with according to the appropriate University disciplinary procedures.

  • Emailed or other electronic versions of the assignment will NOT be accepted, unless a specialarrangement has been made with the lecturer or co-ordinator.
  • Your report should be BOUND with a spiral binder and a clear plastic cover sheet. Assignmentsthat are stapled or loose-leaf in a folder often become lost or are at least difficult to mark.
  • High marks will be awarded to students who show evidence of high level analysis and critical thinking with respect to their chosen articles. The quality of the article will also be taken intoaccount. Reflections should show evidence of deep thinking and personal learning rather than asimple description of events.

It is highly recommended that your assignment shows evidence that you actually carried out the activity/activities described and that you have not simply made it up! There are several ways youcan do this. For example, take photos of your sample engaging in their skill development activity,request the to fill out a feedback form or to write a reflection, etc.

Subject description

This subject aims to equip students with the theoretical underpinnings and practical tools necessary to increase proficiency in a number of management and communication skill areas. Specifically, the subject provides students with the opportunity to engage in active participation, personal reflection, experimentation and practice. It is based on the premise that we ourselves are responsible for the outcomes in our lives and that non-judgmental self awareness and acceptance is fundamental to personal development. To this end, there is a strong focus on experiential learning and the role of individual and team reflection.

Subject objectives

On successful completion of this subject students should be able to:

  1. discuss the application of various theoretical frameworks in interpersonal management and communication skills
  2. demonstrate an increased self-awareness and proficiency in nominated skill areas
  3. illustrate a range of practical techniques to increase proficiency in nominated skill areas in themselves and others
  4. appreciate the role of reflection in personal skill development.

The subject also contributes specifically to the following Program Learning Objectives (PLO):

apply technical skills necessary for professional practice in business (PLO 5.2).

Contribution to course aims and graduate attributes

This subject develops an understanding of the nature of intrapersonal and interpersonal competencies and their

relevance to management practice in contemporary organisations. It aims to develop skills though intensive learning

in order to establish a platform for continued development on the part of the student. Cultural and gender issues are

also explored in this context.
