Paper/Powerpoint Reasoning Program MockupInstructions :

There are 5 kinds of reasoning we have covered thus far in this course (by the end of week 6) :

Deductive

Inductive

Hypothesis Testing

Statistical Reasoning

Problem Solving

*The sample papers provided may go over other types of reasoning covered later in the course, ignore those, and they’ll go over more than the required 2 kinds of reasoning for YOUR paper I assignment, don’t get confused, your requirements are only 2, and pick from the 5 types of reasoning mentioned above !

Paper Instructions :

Pick2 (TWO) of these 5 kinds of reasoning, and please do the following 6 steps for each of the 2 kinds of reasoning you have chosen(you can skip ahead and look at the sample assignment section in the following pages before you read this, it might make more sense that way!) :

  1. Describe this area of reasoning generally, in 1-2 sentences.
  2. Within this area of reasoning, think ofone specific example of this kind of reasoning from the course materials (book or powerpoint), and explain this example, in 1-2 sentences
  3. Pick a content area from high school (math, science, English, gym anything!), and give an example of when students will encounter the specific example of reasoning you thought of in (2) in this content area, in 1-3 sentences
  4. Explain two research studies from the course materials (book or powerpoint), or find your own study outside of the course materials (PSYCHINFO, ERIC, etc.) that relate to the specific example of reasoningin the content area you chose. [5-8 sentences for each study]

-be sure to cite the studies using APA citation

-be sure to explain what was the experiment conducted and what were the             findings of the experiment

  1. Use one or both of two studies to explain in what situations students will have a harder time doing the specific example of reasoning you created from this content area. [3-8 sentences]

-be sure to very directly state the connection between the findings of the study      you’re citing and why the study shows that reasoning will be harder in the            situation you are describing for your specific example you chose

  1. Use one or both of two studies to explain in what situations students will have an easier time doing the specific example of reasoning you created from this content area. [3-8 sentences]

-be sure to very directly state the connection between the findings of the                            study you’re citing and why the study shows that reasoning will be easier                               in the situation you are describing for your specific example you                                           chose

To make sure you do all these 6 steps, I want you to PASTE in each step, and highlight it in yellow (see my sample for how I did this), and then write what’s required under each step (see my sample, copy how I did it !)

*You can reuse the studies mentioned and described in the samples, but don’t copy them verbatim, paraphrase and add your own thoughts, and obviously choose your own content areas, and specific examples for each kind of reasoning. Don’t copy these from the papers, that’s plagiarism. Don’t freak, its real simple, copying the studies is fine, copying the specific examples used is NOT.

*Your paper should be about 5 pages long, double-spaced, 1” margins, 12 pt. font, a little longer, a little shorter is fine, but try to keep it around 5 pages!

This is a good website for how to cite in APA (be sure to do in-text citations and a references section):

http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/1/

*The full citation to most studies in the books should be in the back of the books, under the “references” section

PowerpointInstructions :

*After you’ve finished writing your paper, make a powerpoint, 3 slides, that shows a computer program you could make to teach BOTH (2) of the two types of reasoning you went over in your paper. Base the design of the program on your studies predicted would make reasoning easier and harder for these types of reasoning. Explain each slide in 5 sentences, under each slide. (You can repeat slides you’ve made from the discussion board, that’s fine, but the computer program MUST be related to your paper).

Sample Section for you to look at :

Deductive Reasoning

Pick 1 area of reasoning from the course you are interested in, describe this area of reasoning generally, in 1-2 sentences.

Deductive reasoning involves using stated rules to make a conclusion that can be proven true or false.

Within this area of reasoning, think of one specific example of this kind of reasoning from the course materials (book or powerpoint), and explain this example, in 1-2 sentences

Modus Tollens is an example of deductive reasoning. The rule of modus tollens is thatin the proposition, “If P, then Q”, P “implies” Q, when P is False and Q is False, then the value of the statement is True, because if P is not present, then Q should also not be present.

Pick a content area from high school (math, science, English, gym anything!), and give an example of when students will encounter the specific example of reasoning you thought of in (2) in this content area, in 1-3 sentences

Students in high school math classes encounter the rule of modus tollens when they study the logic unit of their curriculum. They have to be able to learn this rule and be able to recognize when to apply it to logic problems.

Explain two research studies from the course materials (book or powerpoint) that relate to the example of reasoning you chose. [5-8 sentences for each study]

-be sure to cite the studies using APA citation

-be sure to explain what was the experiment conducted and what were the             findings of the experiment

STUDY 1

Modus Tollens has been studied through the Wason Selection Task (Wason and Johnson-Laird, 1972). Here, participants are shown 4 cards, which have a vowel on one side and an even number on the other. The implication is that if a card with a vowel implies the opposite side of the card has an even number. Participants are asked which cards they need to turn over to determine whether the proposition is true. They have difficulty understanding that they need to turn over the card with an odd number to make sure the opposite side of the card is not a vowel, which is the rule of modus tollens.

Explain two research studies from the course materials (book or powerpoint), or find your own study outside of the course materials (PSYCHINFO, ERIC, etc.) that relate to the example of reasoning you chose. [5-8 sentences for each study]

-be sure to cite the studies using APA citation

-be sure to explain what was the experiment conducted and what were the             findings of the experiment

STUDY 2

In contrast to the Wason Selection Task, students have a much easier time applying modus tollens when the context is something they have experience with. For example, a study where Florida undergraduates had to judge whether or not the drinking age of 19 was being noted at a party where coke or beer was being drunk showed that participants correctly applied modus tollens more easily than with the Wason Selection Task(Griggs & Cox, 1982).

Use one or both of two studies to explain in what situations students will have a harder time doing the specific example of reasoning you created. [3-8 sentences]

-be sure to very directly state the connection between the findings of the study      you’re citing and why the study shows that reasoning will be harder in the            situation you are describing for your specific example you chose

Just like in the Wason Selection Task, where participants did not properly apply modus tollens because the Card selection task was something they were not familiar with, we expect high school mathematics students to have the greatest trouble at applying modus tollens when giving probability problems with no context at all or a context which the students cannot relate to readily. So simply showing students the rule of implication and a truth table for modus tollenswould result in many students simply memorizing the table and the rule. Students would then not be as likely to transfer the implication rules and truth table to new contexts.

Use one or both of two studies to explain in what situations students will have an easier    time doing the specific example of reasoning you created. [3-8 sentences]

-be sure to very directly state the connection between the findings of the study                              you’re citing and why the study shows that reasoning will be easier in the                                       situation you are describing for your specific example you chose

In order to improve student learning we look to studies by Cheng and Holyoak (1985),which demonstrate that when people can interpret logic propositions in terms of pragmatic reasoning schemas that they learn through everyday life they are more likely to reason correctly. Training people in pragmatic schemas also enhances their ability to apply the corresponding logic rules to new contexts (Cheng, Holyoak, Nisbett& Oliver, 1986). Here, a pragmatic reasoning schema that would be helpful for applying modus tollens would be a contractual scheme, like permission and obligation applied to the Florida undergraduates reasoning problem. Having students learn the Florida undergraduates problem and similar context-rich problems before teaching them formal logic rules in terms of P and Q, should ground their understanding from the very beginning and improve their ability to reason using modus tollens as well as other logic deduction rules in general like modus ponens. Since students here at 9th graders, the context should be geared more towards everyday contexts the students have experience up to this grade level, such as permission to use a hall pass or an obligation to do their homework before class.
