The article was obtained from the Research Gate website.  The key words for the topic were mainly used to search for the article. The article will be of great importance in my research as it will provide a broad range of information about homeschooling in the US setting  and the primary motivators for the parents to go for homeschooling as opposed to private and public schools. Collom was investigating the main motivation for parents to go for homeschooling and the primary determinants for the homeschoolers’ achievements.

The author of the article confirms that homeschooling is growing in popularity within the US. He also confirmed that homeschoolers are somehow difficult to study thus the limited research about them. However, Collom heavily depended on the available past literature about homeschooling to make conclusion about parents’ motivation and the children’s performance in homeschooling.

The research applied regression models in predicting the parents’ motivation and achievement for children in a standardized test.  This study is unique as it’s the only one among the Homeschooling research that employed the multivariate modeling. Collom found that criticism in public schools is one of the motivators for the black parents to prefer homeschooling to the public school. The parents of the black children believe that offering education at home saves their children from discrimination in public school which would otherwise affect their performance. Some parents especially in the families where both spouses exist, the main motivator was a strong believe that public schools are full of problems thus preferred offering education at home. The older parents were motivated by the attraction to the home charter. Further, the research also revealed that homeschooling experience also prompted the encouragement of the homeschooling system. Regarding the students’ achievement Collom found that homeschooling children who come from conservative families had a better outcome in the standardized test. Further, the article indicates that homeschooled children mainly because of the family and children needs tend to perform poorly academically.

This article was obtained from the Google scholars through the search of my topic’s keywords “home schooling.” The article is directly related to my topic; thus it will be of great use. Green and Hoover-Dempsey, the authors of the article were focused to identify the main reason why parents opt to homeschool their children instead of taking them to school. The authors indicates that most of the parents who opt for home schooling are motivated by very strong construction role. The paper also shows that parents preferring to homeschool their children have a positive perception of the life context and are much focused on helping their children to learn. Moreover, the researchers in this article indicate that parents promoting homeschooling have a believe that in public school education, the content and the values are less implicated thus prefer providing education in school. Moreover, the parents opting for homeschooling have a firm believe that they are responsible for their children’s education.

The study in the article involved sending surveys to about 250 parents who had elementary school children who were homeschooling. However, the result of the survey was from a sample size of 136 parents from southeastern state and whose children were homeschooling.  Sampling methods is what the researcher used to collect the data from the target population. To encourage the participation of the parents, the researcher made use of incentives that were provided to the parents from a local bookstore. The author also used a previous research which had involved 358 parents with children in public school to compare with the current research. In the comparison, the author identified a significant difference between the two groups. Independent sample t-test was employed in the analysis of the result by the researcher. The study is of great use to those advocating for homeschooling as it provides an in-depth understanding of the parent involvement in the education of their children. The researcher also made use of literature from the existing research to provide a wider range of information about homeschooling.

The article was obtained from the national center for the education statistics database. The topics keywords homeschooling were used in search of the article. The article contains a report of statistical analysis of homeschooling in the United States. The researchers aimed at getting the number of children who are homeschooled in the United States. The report also consists of some other information such as ethnicity. The report contains an explanation of how homeschooling has changed from 1999 to 20003 and also provides the major reasons why parents opt to homeschool their children instead of taking them to schools.

The researchers used interviews to collect the data. About 11,994 school aged children were interviewed. Of the total number of the interviewees, 239 of them were homeschooling. The study revealed an increase of homeschooled children in 2003 from1999. The increase was about 29%. Another interview was conducted on the parents to get their reasons for homeschooling. In the interview parents, manly homeschooled their children as they were concerned about the school’s environment where safety and drug use were their major concerns. The part of research that was conducted in 1999 showed that a higher percentage of whites’ homeschooled as compared to the percentage of Hispanic and the blacks. When another research was undertaken in 2003, there was an increase of homeschooled children in all races. Further, the authors of the article also noted that the largest percentage of homeschooled children were from larger families and from families where parents had high school diploma and below. Princiotta & Bielick also indicated that majority of parents obtained books for homeschooling from public libraries and very few who collected study materials for their children from education publishers

The audience of this report is the state, education agencies, and the future researchers. The policy maker would also use the report to make policies related to the education. The article is of great importance in my research as it offers detailed information about homeschooling.

The article will be of great importance in the development of different views about the topic. The article mainly made use of secondary data where information from the different literature was obtained to identify the harms related to the homeschooling.

West noted that homeschooling is growing at a very high rate. He also acknowledged that there are more children who are home schooled today than enrolled in schools. The article indicates that majority of the children being home-schooled today are mainly from fundamentalist Protestants who are not comfortable with the secularity in the public schools. The researcher suggests that homeschooled children are at risk of physical abuse. The researcher also indicated that homeschooled children are likely to have high health risk as compared to children attending public schools where immunization is strictly monitored. Home schooled children are also likely to suffer political harm. In conclusion, West acknowledged that despite the potential risks related to homeschooling, there are good reasons that make it be allowed by the federal government.

The homeschooling parents are the main audiences of the report. The parents who homeschool their children are provided with an insight of problems that their children may face thus making the appropriate precautions. Policy makers are also the audience of the report as the information provided can help in the development of policies to protect homeschooled children.
